Fishing Kit Basics
Getting started in amateur fishing will require that you first acquire a fishing license. Each state’s game and fish commission decides on the rates for varying hunting and fishing licenses in your state. Every angler needs some basic equipment called tackle.
You should consider what type of fishing you would be doing before selecting a rod and reel. There are open-faced reels and closed to choose from, for a new fisherman I would suggest a closed reel, as they are less prone to tangling in what is called a bird’s nest. Open face reels are known for this aggravation, even experienced angler have it happen.
There are several things to consider when shopping for your new rod and reel. The most important is the type of fishing you will do. Fly fishing requires different types of lures and line than say trout fishing. When you have decided, what fish you are aiming for you will need to find a simple rod to start. Much of this will fall to personal taste and comfort. Decide on your preferred grip, length and weight.
Grips can be made of many materials but cork and foam are most widely available. Rods come in one of three types solid, sectional and telescopic. A solid graphite rod is probably a good first choice. However if you prefer a sectional rod they are simple to assemble. Starting at the handle the pieces will join via male and female connections, each piece will be slightly smaller in diameter. Be sure the guides or eyes as their called are lined up when you assemble the rod. A telescopic rod collapses in on itself, this type of rod is a specialty rod so time sake we will skip it.
The type of rod is not nearly as important as the size and flexibility. For a newbie 6′ length and a medium action is fine for a first rod and reel. When shopping do not be afraid to bend the rod and see what kind of action it will give you. You also will want to know that it has good flexibility and not break easily. Most new rods are made of flexible graphite because it is lightweight but very strong
The same way that there are many different rods and lures to choose from there are many sizes and types of fishing line as well. The most popular lines are made of nylon or monofilament. Next, you will notice that all line is classified by weight, such as 4lb test. This signifies the breaking point of the line, the higher the lbs the heavier and thicker the line is. Fishing line is sold on spools and your reel should have a recommended optimum length.
It is a good idea that your rod, reel and line be compatible with each other as well as with the type of fishing you are doing. A good fishing tackle box will also contain a net, stringer, extra line, hooks, filet knife, choice of bait and a first aid kit. Don’t forget a cushion, sunglasses and tasty snacks!
