Options And Methods Of Tattoo Removal
Removing a tattoo is generally thought to be a rather painful procedure. And, while this may have indeed been true in years past, technology today has advanced considerably and now includes various methods of tattoo removal that cause far less pain, but are also effective. Two methods that are becoming increasingly popular for removing tattoos utilize light based and laser technologies.
Both are considered to be surgical procedures and both use energy from light to destroy and remove the tattoo’s ink embedded in the skin. Once in contact with the ink, the light’s energy causes it to break down into microscopic pieces that are then harmlessly passed through the body naturally and without complication.
This procedure is actually rather similar to the one used for the removal of unwanted hair. The surgeon or dermatologist uses a wand-like instrument that emits pulses of light which are then aimed directly at the tattoo. The laser or light wand is generally placed directly against the tattooed skin in order to utilize the light’s energy most effectively.
Usually, the sensations felt during the procedure are often described as the feeling of the skin being flicked continually with an elastic band. Of course, the bigger the tattoo and the larger the area being treated, the more painful the sensation may be over time. Also, where the tattoo is located will dictate the level of pain to expect as the more sensitive areas of skin, such as those without much muscle or hard tissue, may need to have a topical anesthetic applied first.
Laser and light based treatments for tattoo removal are somewhat similar to one another, as with either, the procedures always involve the use of cooling gels which are applied to the tattooed skin not only to cool the skin itself, but also to act as a conductor for the energy. The gels work to protect the skin while at the same time drawing in the light in order to break down the ink thoroughly.
If you have a tattoo you’d like to get rid of once and for all, you may want to consider laser or light based technologies. Remember that because they are surgical procedures, both may pose some level of risk, not to mention the financial expense involved. Depending on variables such as the size and location of your tattoo, a few night stay at the hospital may even be required. While both light and laser tattoo removal procedures are effective, it’s important to consider your options carefully before making any decisions.
